Seriously this time – you patched your Windows computer, right?
Another RPC vulnerability is discovered and Microsoft has a patch out for it…
There is no exploit of this vulnerability yet, so get out there and get that PC patched up. Do the entire planet a favor and get in front of this one, Did you take my ZoneAlarm (www.zonealarm.com) advice last time? If so, you’re at least covered, but you should still patch your copy of Windows. Running Windows95/98/ME? You’re safe from this one as well. Users of WindowsNT4/2000/XP/2003 are vulnerable and need to go to Microsoft for their update.
You can go here for the patch.
So if you go to Microsoft’s main web page at www.microsoft.com, you will see a link called “3 steps to help ensure your PC is protected.” If you follow the link, you see some fairly sound advice;
1 – Use an Internet Firewall (remember my ZoneAlarm recommendation?) 2 – Get Computer Updates 3 – Use Up-to-Date AntiVirus Software
Great advice, all of it. But what I thought was interesting was this piece;
“Macintosh computer users, get security information on the Apple security site.”
Color me skeptical, but I found it interesting that Microsoft was “helping” Macintosh users by providing this link.
Personally, I think Microsoft is a little concerned about all the positive press that Apple’s OS X operating system is getting lately in regards to it being less vulnerable to viruses and worms. This is not a public service announcement from Microsoft to help Macintosh users, this, in my opinion, is pure deflection. I believe that Microsoft feels they can get people to believe that the Macintosh also has security vulnerabilities. They are trying to deflect the attention away from them as if to say “hey, others have the same problems.”
I hope their scare tactics don’t work on you.

Random thoughts on a Saturday night…
Just a bunch of stuff that I noticed today.
