Sony KDF-60XS955 – A.K.A. “The Widowmaker”

Against my wife’s hopes, dreams, and wishes, I have started researching new TVs to replace the Toshiba 36″ CRT TV that has absolutely nothing wrong with it at all. I believe we can classify this one as a “want” not a “need.”

For quite a while now I have been keeping an eye on the prices for the 50″ Samsung DLP TV, which looks amazing. Every once in a while I will stop by Best Buy or Circuit City and just look at it. Last Sunday I stopped by Best Buy just before the Steeler game was about to start and I had a TV just jump out at me because the picture was so amazing. Most people that known me would expect me to use the word plasma at this point, but that’s not this time. I just can’t justify $7500 for a 40-something inch TV. Remember, the 36″ we have with the DirecTV satellite dish looks pretty darn good as it is, plus, it fits in the entertainment center we have right now. Remember this last point, it will become more important as the story goes. When I bought the 36″ that we have now, I basically bought the biggest TV that I could stuff in to the hole in the entertainment center. So how can I possibly go any bigger?

The entertainment center is actually modular, but if you looked at it you would think it is one massive piece of furniture. It is really 6 separate module all connected at the top. I figure all I have to do is eliminate the 2 center pieces (below and above the TV), move the sides out as far as I can go to the side walls, add a new stand and the new Sony TV.

The Sony is the one that just jumped out at me at the store. I watched the entire first half of the Steeler game at Best Buy on a lot of different TVs. I even asked random customers for their opinions and they all agreed that the Sony KDF-60XS955 was the best picture out there. Did I mention that they were driving the HD from a set of rabbit ears on the floor?! Free, over the air (OTA) HDTV, what could be better? Oh, I know what could be better – watching it on a 60″ LCD television, that’s what! That’s right, 60 inches baby. This monster measures 66″x40″. To put that in perspective, take your average front door, turn it on its side, and make it a little higher. Huge!

Which is why I call it The Widowmaker. If I actually pull this thing off, my wife is going to kill me.
