Welcome to the family Bob!

The girls have been wanting another per since Chester died a few years ago. Val and I were definitely against it, but with their birthdays upon us I figured a fish would be a good way for them to get a pet without causing too much trouble.

Last night we walked past a pet store and went in to see what they had. We picked up a Beta Starter Kit and I picked out a purple Beta to go with it. The girls love him and they named him Bob.

So now we have a new member of the family – welcome Bob the Beta to our home.

An amazing account from the ground in New Orleans

We questioned why we couldn’t cross the bridge anyway, especially as there was little traffic on the 6-lane highway. They responded that the West Bank was not going to become New Orleans and there would be no Superdomes in their City. These were code words for if you are poor and black, you are not crossing the Mississippi River and you were not getting out of New Orleans.

Let’s send them engraved invitations as well

The United States is considering an all-out military attack in the coming weeks against the town of Tal Afar in northern Iraq, which it sees as a stronghold of rebellion, a U.S. general said on Thursday.

Maybe we should just tell them the time and let them know what covered dish to bring. What the hell is wrong here? This is war, right? “Hey, all you bad guys, get ready. Here we come!”

General whatsyourname, you are officially my Dumbass Of The Month.

OS X + Intel = Wow

The story you are about to read might be true or it might be something I am totally making up. You’ll need o decide.

Today I saw the Intel version of OS X running on a vanilla Dell Optiplex GX280. Not only did everything that was thrown at it work except for iChatAV, but the performance really caught me off guard.

I have a 15″ G4 PowerBook running at 1.25GHz with 1GB of RAM. I also have a Mac Mini running at 1.45GHz with 512MB of RAM. I have always been happy with the performance of my PowerBook and Mini. Very happy. But every single thing that was done on the Mactel machine absolutely blew the doors off of my machines. Everything just jumped on to the screen when clicked or selected.

When Steve Jobs announced that there had been a group of people doing parallel development on the Intel processor I was a little skeptical. Now that I have seen the Mactel version in action I can honestly say that Steve must have been telling us the truth because this version is spot on exact to the PowerPC version. That doesn’t just happen overnight.

Will I morn for the G4/G5? Sure. In a lot of ways I believe it is a better processor than the Intel chips. I think AMD has the edge right now in the x86 world though. One thing is for sure, I am now positive that I will jump on an Intel based PowerBook when one is released. The speed is just too significant to deny.
