PowerBook G4 Hard Drive Upgrade – Complete!

It’s amazing how much the right tools can make things easier.  Once I picked up the proper screwdrivers the PowerBook was really simple to get open.  The hard drive swap was very easy as well.  The hardest part for me was getting the seam perfect where the upper case is just above the optical drive slot.  I must have bent some tabs a little too much on disassembly and it made it tough to get a nice, clean seam when putting it back together.  It didn’t end up perfect but I’ll take it.  It doesn’t look that bad.  You just have to remember how thin that metal is you’re working with because you can easily collapse the optical drive slot (over and over again in my case).

The new drive is extremely quite and I now have close to 90GB of free space.  Is it faster?  I think so.  Anything that dips down to read or write data from the disk is definitely faster.  I have wanted to do this upgrade for a long time and never took the time to do it.  If I have any regrets it is that I didn’t do this sooner.  Remember, I’m only 30 minutes in to the new drive working so anything can happen at this point, but I’m keeping my original 80GB drive just like it came out of the PowerBook just in case I ever need it again.

I’ll update this some time in the future when I can get a better feel for battery life and performance.

PowerBook G4 hard drive upgrade – so close

As with everything I do, nothing is ever as easy as it seems. My 3 year old PowerBook keeps getting close to running out of space so I figured I would buy a larger hard drive and replace it myself. I purchased a Seagate 5400.3 160GB notebook hard drive from NewEgg.com. Upon checking out, they recommended a USB drive carrier so the drive I got could be used externally. Since I needed to buy one of them for my internal drive when it becomes my external drive, I figured I would take advantage of the extra $10 discount and bought the recommended carrier.

Everything showed up at the house today and I used Carbon Copy Cloner to image my system drive to the larger external drive. I then wanted to test out the clone to make sure it worked correctly and could not get my PowerBook to boot from it. Ends up I missed a very important piece of information; OS X will not boot to a USB drive from a G4 processor. So it looks like I need to find a firewire enclosure for the new disk.

The second piece of the story is that you need a very small torx (t6) to get the PowerBook apart and I couldn’t find that screwdriver to save my life tonight. The entire family ripped the house apart and we never found it. Tomorrow I will pick up the firewire enclosure and the torx piece and give this a shot again.

Hopefully I will be able to post from my PowerBook and its new, much larger hard drive tomorrow night.

Duped in to exercising by technology

A couple days ago I picked up the Nike + iPod Sport Kit hoping it would work with the 5th generation 80GB iPod I had just picked up. I was 99% sure it would only work with the Nano, but that 1% of hope forced me to buy it. For the record, the Sport Kit only works with the Nano today. Lesson learned.

Fortunately my wife has a 4GB Nano that I was able to use instead. I also do not have the official Nike shoe that has a place to store the device, but I just worked it under my shoe laces and headed out for a 2 mile walk this morning. I started walking outside this week because I just can’t stand using the treadmill and I really have to do something. All the extra weight is causing me to snore really loud and my wife says I stop breathing 100 times an hour when I sleep. I really don’t feel like dealing with Sleep Apnea right now, and since the main cause of it is obesity I decided to try to cure myself through exercise.

If you like to walk or go for a run you will really like this little device. It’s so small you never notice it is there and it is constantly communicating with your iPod while you walk. A piece of advice though, the first thing you should do on your first run or walk is calibrate it with a distance you know. I didn’t do that this morning and after my first mile my Nano said I had gone 1.14 miles. I decided to calibrate it for my second mile, and I’ll know how well that worked out when I go for my walk tomorrow.

After you walk or run, you can then sync your Nano and it will upload your data to the Nike website and you can track your progress and set goals. This is really pretty slick. I never cared about it when Apple announced this new device, but now that I have used it I think I am hooked. I’m looking forward to the next time I walk with it. I especially like how it talks to you. Nice touch. For me this was definitely worth the 30 bucks.

Microsoft Entourage – 6 months later

Since switching from Apple Mail to Entourage 6 months ago things have been running very well. When I am working away from the office I communicate with everyone using Microsoft Office 2004 for the Mac and nobody really knows. While in the office I use Office2003, but outside of the office I rarely use anything other than my PowerBook.

Although Entourage is running very well, there are a few things that Microsoft could do to make my life a little easier. The Calendar is close, but Outlook has a couple features that I want in Entourage.

  • The first feature is the ability to look at my Calendar from a Meeting Request. Let me explain a little better – in Outlook, when I receive a Meeting Request, I can Accept, Deny, Propose a new time, or view my Calendar at the time of the meeting request. When I click on Calendar from the meeting request it will let me see my Calendar at the time of the meeting. That way I can see what else I have going on then and determine if this meeting is more important that something else I may have booked. Very handy and I’d like to see that in Entourage.
  • Letting me know if I have a conflict with the meeting request from inside the meeting request itself. In Outlook I can see this info and I’d like to see it in Entourage.
  • The ability to forward a meeting request. There are times when I cannot make a meeting, or I need someone to attend for me, so I will either ask the meeting requester to invite that person or I will forward the meeting invitation myself. I don’t see how to do that using Entourage and I would like that feature.
  • A Today button in the Calendar view. I realize I can go to the View Date button and today’s date is there, but I’m spoiled by Outlook2003 and would like 1 less click. Even though I can use the key combination of Command-T, I still want the button.
  • Lastly is the size of the cached email database. It gets pretty large quickly (well over 1GB) and things seem to get a little slower as the database grows. Not a show stopper, but something that would be nice to have.

Other than these few things I still believe Entourage is a very good email client and pretty much a must-have if you want to use a Mac in an Exchange environment.

A certain someone said…

Just thinking out loud here, but if someone quotes someone else about how someone’s religion is based on violence, and then that someone’s first response to the original someone’s quote is to actually resort to violence, hasn’t that group of someones really just validated the original quote in the first place?

Rockstar:Supernova – it’s anybody’s ballgame

Dilana made a huge comeback tonight and proved she can front the band Supernova.  I don’t envy the people that have to decide who wins this thing because they are all really good and all have different styles.  For my money I would like to see Dilana win it, but Toby fits as well.  Magni is not bad but I don’t know if he’s the right fit.  Lucas is excellent but there are certain notes he hits that make the words difficult to understand, and he uses a ton of vibrato in his voice, something I have never been a big fan of.

Dilana is the perfect blend of talent and damage that makes me want to hear more.

Happy Birthday Megan!

It’s hard to believe that 11 years ago Megan came in to our life.  Time is really just flying by.  It was exciting and terrifying all at the same time.  That’s to be expected with any first time parents, but Megan made things a lot more interesting.  She was born prematurely at 28 weeks, weighing in at a whopping 1lb 15oz.  She quickly lost 3oz and dropped to 1lb 12oz.  When you’re that tiny, 3oz is a lot of weight.

Valerie had preeclampsia and had to spend a couple weeks in the hospital before they had no choice but to induce labor or we would lose Megan.  We later learned that Valerie’s preeclampsia was due to a blood disorder called Factor V Leiden – she basically over clots.  Thankfully they learned all of this before we had Bailey, so Valerie had to give herself injections every day during that pregnancy.

Megan spent the first 56 days of her life in an incubator.  Every day we would visit her in the NICU.  I’ve never washed my hands so many times in my life, but it was all worth it.  It’s hard to believe looking at her now, but my wedding ring would fit on her ankle.  She was so  tiny – any furry!  At that age they have not yet lost all of their fur, so that was a little interesting.  That’s where she picked up the nickname of “our little monkey.”  It was weeks before we got to see her without all sorts of tape on her face from the tubes keeping her breathing and fed.

Today Megan is a beautiful, normal, goofy 5th grader that I couldn’t be more proud of.  I can’t imaging how boring life would be around here without her.  It’s funny, but all the headaches that came along with the “terrible two’s’ (and three’s!) are gone.  I barely remember that stuff now.

So Happy Birthday Megan, and a huge thank you to the staff at Magee Women’s Hospital for doing everything they could to make sure Megan survived.  We’ll never be able to repay you.

Apple updates – where do I start?

Apple announced a lot of things today, and I’m happy about all of them.

First, iPods: the Nano now has twice as much storage, is thinner, has a brighter display, up to 24 hours of battery life, and comes in various colors. The “video’ iPods are now 30GB and 80GB, which will come in handy since the iTunes Music Store now sells movies. This wasn’t a surprise to many people as well as the fact that only Disney has signed on for now. The larger iPods have better battery life as well. That extra battery life will come in handy not only for the movies, but also for the games that you can now play. You can purchase the games through iTunes for $4.99. Apple also released iTunes version 7 which is immediately available for download. As is often the case, the new iTunes requires a new version of Quicktime – 7.13. I’ve loaded iTunes 7 and the interface is just slightly different. I’m sure it will grow on me.

These are all things that were pretty much expected from Apple today, but what was unusual for Apple was when they announced that in the first quarter of 2007 they would release the rumored set top box. It is half the size of the Mac Mini and is meant to connect to your TV. They are temporarily calling it the iTV until they can come up with something better.

The next 6 months should get interesting.

Dunn is done

According to this article over on CNet, Patricia Dunn will retire her position as Chairman of HP’s board on 1/18/2007. Something had to be done as this was a huge embarrassment for HP, but I’m not too sure this sends a strong enough message. She retains her position until 1/18/2007 and then gets to remain on the the Board of Directors. Gee, pretty strong punishment for possibly breaking the law and introducing many of us to the term “pretexting.”

Pretexting; so if I call up your phone company and pose as you to get your phone records I am pretexting. Hmm, where I come from it’s called lying, plain and simple. Thanks HP for giving her that weak slap on the wrist and showing us all that ethics, as well as basic right and wrong, are not that important to you.

Pretexting should be illegal. Hold on, it is…There Ought To Be A Law.
