It’s amazing how much the right tools can make things easier. Once I picked up the proper screwdrivers the PowerBook was really simple to get open. The hard drive swap was very easy as well. The hardest part for me was getting the seam perfect where the upper case is just above the optical drive slot. I must have bent some tabs a little too much on disassembly and it made it tough to get a nice, clean seam when putting it back together. It didn’t end up perfect but I’ll take it. It doesn’t look that bad. You just have to remember how thin that metal is you’re working with because you can easily collapse the optical drive slot (over and over again in my case).
The new drive is extremely quite and I now have close to 90GB of free space. Is it faster? I think so. Anything that dips down to read or write data from the disk is definitely faster. I have wanted to do this upgrade for a long time and never took the time to do it. If I have any regrets it is that I didn’t do this sooner. Remember, I’m only 30 minutes in to the new drive working so anything can happen at this point, but I’m keeping my original 80GB drive just like it came out of the PowerBook just in case I ever need it again.
I’ll update this some time in the future when I can get a better feel for battery life and performance.
