I would agree that it is not as good as NNW, especially because of the lack of search capabilities (hello? this is a Google product, right?). But for my needs, Reader has really been excellent and I removed NNW from my Dock.

When you export your subscriptions from NNW, there is an option to keep the groupings - it works well when you import your subcription to Google Reader.

I also gave Google Reader a try. My take is that it is not yet at the level of NNW. Especially, I lack the search and smart lists features of NNW. Also,I do not like the left sidebar of Google Reader.

[...] Wow, the Safari thing was short lived, huh? OK, here’s the deal with that. Remember how I said I was going to try the Google Reader for a week to see if it could replace NetNewsWire? Well Google Reader is pretty good once you learn all the hotkeys that matter to you.
